The Fernley High School boys cross country team won the Incline Highlander 5k on Oct. 15 and
placed second in the Lowry Cross Country Invitational.
Joe Perkins led the way for the Vaqueros, finishing second out of 33 runners at Incline with a
time of 19:22.7 and fourth out of 119 runners at Lowry with a time of 15:52.
At Incline, the Vaqueros had four of the top six runners, with Zachary Petersen placing fourth
with a time of 19.29.0, Cael Wilson fifth in 19:29.5 and Dominick Dietrich sixth with a time of
19:47.0. Skyler Ledesma-James was Fernley’s fifth scorer with a 15th place finish in a time of
21:56.1.
As a team, the boys were first among the four schools with full teams, with 17 team points.
Incline was second with 27 points.
The girls team finished second of the three full teams with 29 points. Incline won the meet with
10 points.
Corbyn Gillespie was the top finisher for the Ferney girls, in eighth place among 19 total runners
with a time of 27:16.5. Wynter Angus placed ninth in 28:05.8, Regan Scott came in 10th with a
time of 28:58.5, Grace Schmidtlein was 16th in 35:35.6 and Reann Jones placed 17th with a time
of 37:32.2.
At Lowry, the boys finished second with 100 points behind Spring Creek, which won the meet
with 63 points. There were 12 full boys teams.
Behind Perkins, Wilson finished 18th with a time of 17:54, Petersen came in 21st in 17:58,
Dietrich placed 26th in 18:15 and Alex Mergell posted a time of 18:37 to finish 32nd.
The girls were eighth among eight full teams.
Gillespie had the fastest time for Fernley, finishing 37th in a field of 87 runners with a time of
23:46. Angus was 54th in 25:08, Scott placed 55th with a time of 25:11, Schmidtlein finished 76th
in 30:43 and Jones came in 84th with a time of 34:11.
The Vaqueros have this week off to prepare for the Northern 3A Region Championships on Oct.
31 at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.
