Heavy machinery and Charlie Brown bobbleheads shared the spotlight at Greater Nevada Field on June 27 as the Reno Aces hosted Mining Night and Peanuts Night and defeated the Oklahoma City Comets 9-4.
On the field, the Aces built an early lead entirely through two-out rallies. Five consecutive batters reached base during a four-run rally in the first inning after the first two batters were retired. In the bottom of the third, Christian Cerda hit his second double of the game to drive in two more runs, stretching the Aces’ lead to 7-2.
The stands filled quickly as more than 1,000 Nevada miners, their families and other fans took advantage of discounted tickets to witness the collision of industrial grit and classic comic-strip nostalgia. Mining Night is an annual celebration of the industry’s role in Northern Nevada. The event was sponsored by the Nevada Mining Association.
The evening highlighted the state’s mining workforce and included several features on and off the field. Evette Nevarez, winner of the Nevada Mining Association’s America 250 Art Contest, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Empire Cat displayed equipment outside the stadium, and a personal protective equipment race underscored the importance of safety in mining.
Angelique Martinez of the Nevada Mining Association won the balloon pop contest, while interactive booths from KGHM and AngloGold Ashanti Nevada Projects offered demonstrations showing how mining supports everyday life.
The Aces offered discounted tickets for the event, which has become one of the team’s larger themed nights of the season.
