The Tonopah Muckers kept the Battle of the Pickaxe trophy on Saturday night, rolling past the Virginia City Muckers 44-6 in the annual Mucker Bowl.
Tonopah set the tone early, controlling the first half and building a 22-0 lead before halftime. Virginia City tried to swing the momentum in the third quarter with a quick touchdown drive, but the two-point conversion attempt came up short.
From there, Tonopah’s defense clamped down while its offense added four more scores to seal the win.
The rivalry game, one of the most anticipated on the small-school football calendar, drew a spirited crowd to Virginia City, where fans of both teams traded cheers on a breezy late-August night.
The victory gives Tonopah an early boost to its season, while Virginia City will look to regroup heading into next week’s action.
Final score: Tonopah 44, Virginia City 6.
