On Mar. 4, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced Matthew Magaletti as the Sierra Front Field Manager for the Carson City District.

According to Magaletti, BLM Field Managers oversee local field offices responsible for managing public lands within designated boundaries. The Sierra Front Field Office manages approximately 1.5 million acres of public land across Washoe, Lyon, Carson City, Douglas, and Alpine counties.

He previously worked in a variety of roles throughout his 20-year career, including positions in state offices in Wyoming and Nevada, local field offices, and at the bureau’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Magaletti started his career in southern Arizona and said the experience stood out as one of the highlights of his professional journey. “I must say that it was the most rewarding time in my career because you are able to collaborate and work directly with the public and the resources that our agency manages,” he said. “I really wanted to get back to that environment, and this position allows me to do that.”

He also noted that the public lands managed by the Sierra Front Field Office are in one of the fastest growing parts of the state. Because of this, public lands have experienced increased pressure and demand, including recreational use, infrastructure permit requests, and, unfortunately, a rise in dumping and other forms of land degradation. Magaletti stated, “With these pressures, it requires the agency to collaborate more closely with communities, local governments, tribes, and the state to address these concerns. This is the part that I find exciting.”

Magaletti previously worked in Nevada as a Project Coordinator, partnering with agencies, ranchers, and other stakeholders to develop land use plans that support sage grouse habitat conservation while balancing the BLM’s multiple-use mission. Magaletti expressed his excitement for the new job, stating, “Nevada is my home and I am excited to be part of managing the public lands that I recreate on and depend on as part of our local economy.”
